this is new opened the current run of releases, and in hindsight it set the terms for everything that followed. Thirteen tracks, most of them sitting in the five-to-eight minute range, built around what the release notes describe as the gentle pulse of distant nebulae rendered audible.

Deep beneath the audible threshold, something stirs. The gentle pulse of distant nebulae rendered audible. Time stretches and folds around deep bass oscillations. Frequency as meditation, noise as revelation.

What It Sounds Like

This is the low-end record. Where a lot of the musical nature catalog lives in sustained mid-range texture, this is new spends most of its time underneath that - bass oscillation as the structural element rather than the foundation something else gets built on. The tagged descriptors run electronic, dark, intense, spacious, cosmic, minimal, rhythmic, harmonic, and the "rhythmic" tag is doing real work here in a way it doesn't on the drone releases.

Track titles carry more weight than usual too. "Synthetic Aperture Radar," "100 Years in the Dark," "Are the Heavens Hard or Fluid?" - the record is thinking about instruments of observation and the distance between the observer and whatever is being observed. "Rosemary Tea" and "WINTERNATIONAL," both pushing eight minutes, are the two longest pieces and the closest the album comes to sitting still.
